Lupus is a type of disease called an autoimmune disease. Discoid or cutaneous lupus is limited to the skin, usually appearing as a rash. While this type of lupus can become systemic and affect internal organs, 90% of the time it remains in only the skin. This type of lupus is usually much less severe than systemic lupus.
Systemic lupus affects bodily organs. While skin can be affected, usually along with the joints, often other organs like the kidneys, the lungs, other tissues and even blood are affected by the disease. Symptoms vary from person to person.
The most common lupus symptoms are swelling in the joints and arthritis, aching joints, fatigue, fever, rashes-particularly a rash across the nose and cheeks that's butterfly-shaped but the rashes can be anywhere, anemia, chest pain when breathing, sensitivity to sunlight, loss of some hair and kidney problems if the kidneys are organs that are being affected by the disease. More serious symptoms occur in less than 20% of lupus patients.
